Comment:

 I have tracked this issue down to the plugin called IRC Message Format
 0.1.  There is already a ticket filed with that plugins developer
 (https://code.google.com/p/pidgin-irc-format/issues/detail?id=3) so I will
 close this ticket as it doesn't appear to be a pidgin problem rather a
 plugin problem.
