 I don't know how related to iMessage this is, but Apple has some open-
 source server software called "Server Notification Center" which uses
 XMPP:

 Digging around in the new iChat package, it appears that iMessage might be
 implemented as a plug-in?  It might be possible to reverse engineer that?
 Or maybe even link it in directly, copyright permitting.

 Lastly, there is an API for iOS which perhaps could be leveraged somehow.
 From Apple's site: "In iOS 5 SDK, the Message sheet now supports the
 iMessage service, so you can start individual or group text conversations
 from within your app."
