 Confirming, same problem, 280 contacts gets i/o error, 16 contacts works
 just fine.
 Also tested on another 3 accounts with >300 contacts - all have this
 problem.

 Tested with pidgin 2.7.3, 2.7.9, 2.10.0, 2.10.1, 2.10.4 all with same
 result.

 Some more info:

 If you didn't have vk.com account on a computer before then at first
 connect you get "Lost connection with server: Input/output error" during
 receiving of vcards and presences. On second connect you see that vcards
 are available only for some of your contacts, then it starts to receive
 rest of vcards and gets I/O error again. Next time there is more vcards
 available. If you repeat reconnecting you eventually get all vcards and
 I/O error doesn't appear, at least if there is not new contacts.

 Also tested that if you remove contacts photo files from disk cache next
 time you connect you get I/O error again and have to repeatedly reconnect.
