 I'm sorry, I thought I had replied but that comment has been lost.

 If I focus the conversation backlog and start typing, focus does
 automatically go to the input field. Everything would go right if I were
 not using an input method (IM). But I need my IM to write Chinese; the
 first one or two keys go to the input field '''directly''' without being
 handled by my IM.
