 Aha, that does sound suboptimal.

 We can't change the behavior to actually prevent focus on the backlog area
 because that would cause accessibility problems - I believe that the
 backlog area needs to be focusable to facilitate screen readers and such.

 Hopefully it should be possible to pass the initial keystrokes on to the
 input field in such a way that facilitates your input method.
