 A manual slider is elementary in a user's perspective. Most applications
 out there that have like a two- or three-pane layout have these sliders,
 and if not, users will demand one. Fiddling in the preferences is not a
 very friendly alternative to a slider.

 I don't see why it woudn't work. I wasn't there when it was causing
 problems, but I do know that loads and loads of applications have such
 sliders and they cause no problems at all. The key is to implement it
 well, not to remove it when it doesn't work.

 About my related question: removing the buttons. Can it be done? I don't
 need or want any of those buttons. They are silly and take up real estate.
