 I have following installation:
 thomi at poseidon:~$ apt-cache policy wicd
 wicd:
   Installed: 1.7.2.4-2ubuntu1
   Candidate: 1.7.2.4-2ubuntu1
   Version table:
  *** 1.7.2.4-2ubuntu1 0
         500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/universe amd64
 Packages
         100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 thomi at poseidon:~$ apt-cache policy pidgin
 pidgin:
   Installed: 1:2.10.6-0ubuntu2
   Candidate: 1:2.10.6-0ubuntu2
   Version table:
  *** 1:2.10.6-0ubuntu2 0
         500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64
 Packages
         100 /var/lib/dpkg/status


 I needed to do follwing to get pidgin working with auto connection on
 start:
 sudo apt-get purge network-manager

 After that, reboot and done ;)
