Comment:

 We can't bump the required glib version without verifying that OSes we're
 targeting have reasonable access to that version - 2.16 is probably in
 need of a bump, but I'm not sure if we can go all the way to 2.28.

 It could be that the solution is to replace that function with code that
 doesn't require such a new version.
