 Just to follow up on my previous message: this workaround doesn't work
 well enough to rely on. The problem is that not all letters seem to
 generate a character to auto-replace. For instance, "'l" generates a "ĺ"
 which can then be auto-replaced with "'l". However, other letters such as
 "'d'" don't generate any character and thus can't be replaced.

 Sadly, until this is fixed I'm going to have to look for an alternative to
 Pidgin.
