 XMPP supports compressions via these XEP's:

 http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0138.html zlib compression
 http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0170.html Order of events
 http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0229.html lzw compression

 It would be a good idea to add this support to Pidgin for these XEP's so
 that actual data transfer is smaller and faster.

 It is also worth noting that there is a better compression method for XML
 called EXI: http://www.w3.org/XML/EXI/

 This should also be made into an XEP and added to libpurple.
