 Still this seems to be a new problem? The other ticket from 3 years ago
 has been closed with the note "This issue is caused by a third party
 plugin". But I am not using the Facebook plugin, the error just appeared a
 couple of days ago with a normal XMPP connection to Facebook, whereas it
 was working quite fine before.

 So most presumably Facebook changed something with their XMPP servers.
 Will someone of the Pidgin development team "officially" contact FB about
 this? Or must we as users send complaints or bug reports to them?

 Still they advertise usability with Pidgin and other IM clients on their
