 ok I accept that this could well be a microsoft backdoor change seeing as
 they don't need to tie MSN into hotmail anymore because Skype still can't
 do it.

 however, could you not workaround this by simply pointing (or the option
 of) the "go to hotmail" URL at the front door access of
 https://www.outlook.com/owa‎ or even the older mail.live.com/‎?

 if you vectored hotmail to either of these, then the user would go
 straight into their hotmail account if they had hotmail set to remember
 their login and password. This would neatly circumvent the problem of the
 old secure login URL not working anymore.
