Comment:

 Looking at the roster that's returned from Google's server, what Pidgin is
 doing appears correct.  Essentially, Google is telling the client to hide
 (ros:t="H") every one of the buddies listed in that roster (you don't have
 a subscription to/from any of them either)

 Pidgin interprets this as removing the buddies from the local list.
