Comment:

 It does appear that Gentoo uses `/etc/ssl/certs` for system certificates,
 but Pidgin does not use OpenSSL. If you want to use your own root
 certificate, you need to install it so that NSS or GnuTLS can see it
 (depending on which option you used to build Pidgin).
