 I thought SSL was already pluggable.

 Aside, I'm not much of a fan of having multiple issues in the one ticket.
 I'd suggest for a 'general discussion', which this appears to be, would be
 best suited to the -devel mail list. I believe meta-tickets are best
 suited for what are decided as 'blockers' for a particular release.
