Comment:

 Ok, it's hanging at the same place (no big surprise there) - the
 difference now though is that it should be running `gsettings` instead of
 `gconftool-2`.

 If you run `ps -elf | grep -E "gsettings|gconftool-2"` while it is hung,
 you should see the command that pidgin is waiting on.

 Unless there's something else going on here, the real problem is that the
 command is hanging, not anything that pidgin is doing.
