 I still think this is a bug, and I found reports of this issue dating
 years back.

 But at least http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1033658 pointed me
 to a workaround: Using the extended preferences plugin I can "allow buddy
 list to shrink below normal size constraints".
