 bump - I had a similar problem that this ticket helped solve. I have an
 ssh tunnel to my corporate ejabberd server. I was able to connect using
 psi but not pidgin. I changed the "Connect server:" from "localhost" to
 "127.0.0.1" and pidgin will now authenticate.
