 I have written integration of pidgin with unity.

 - It provides integration with the messaging menu. Chat status icons of
 the messaging menu are supported if pidgin.desktop has X-MessagingMenu-
 UsesChatSection=true. You can configure the plugin to display either count
 of unread messages of the elapsed time since last message for conversation
 alerts in the messaging menu.

 - Launcher icon integration is also present. You can configure to disable
 it, show total number of unread messages count, or to show the number of
 unread conversations.
