Comment:

 XMPP without federation isn't really XMPP as it means that JID:s aren't
 universal, can't talk to each other etc. So I'd say Hangouts needs to be
 treated as something separate from XMPP that just happens to use the same
 protocol and same type of usernames.

 So my use case is very simple, and not weird at all. I want to talk to
 people on XMPP, and I want to talk to people on Google Hangouts. And I
 have the same address on both systems (and it's not @gmail.com). Pidgin
 will not let me do that today.
