 Following up on my comment #4: I would still suggest that Pidgin improve
 the user experience when it comes to expired certificates.

 In the meantime, I solved that particular problem with the ZNC certificate
 by regenerating it as described at http://wiki.znc.in/Cert. One trick
 though: enter the same string for Organization Name and Common Name (I
 entered my domain name). That solved two warnings that Pidgin gave (domain
 mismatch).

 Pidgin warned only once that the certificate was self-signed, so I no
 longer get the annoying popups when it connects.
