 For what it's worth, I started receiving the exact same error message
 tonight (Oct. 9, 2013), out of the blue. The exact error message is:

 "Unable to validate certificate. The certificate for login.yahoo.com could
 not be validated. The certificate chain presented is invalid."

 And: "Unable to connect to login.yahoo.com: SSL peer presented an invalid
 certificate."

 I can connect to Yahoo! Messenger just fine using Yahoo's own application,
 via my Yahoo Mail in my web browser, and/or via other IM applications like
 Miranda IM. I can no longer connect at all with Pidgin.

 Going by the error message alone (and I'm no expert on this, just an end
 user), I suspect what's happened is that either Pidgin's security
 certificates have expired or Yahoo's just changed theirs. This may take an
 update to Pidgin to fix.
