 I also created one today and it worked.
 Just to be clear:
 1. I have enabled 2-factor authentication ("Login Approvals").
 2. Account settings -> Security -> App passwords -> Generate app passwords
 -> Generate app passwords -> Enter "Instantbird"
 3. Use the generated password in Instantbird

 I didn't have to change any settings to make this work.
