 A workaround for this may be to use a Jabber-to-Jabber transport (never
 tried a case like this, though).

 This would imply using a different XMPP account and logging into your old
 XMPP account via a j2j gateway service.

 That service would act as a relay, forwarding messages between your old
 and new XMPP account, but Pidgin would be using the gateway's name (I
 think).

 There's a security disavantage to this, because the relay knows your
 account password and sees all your contacts and messages.
 So it's ideal if j2j and the new account are also on your XMPP server.

 (In Pidgin, you need to activate the XMPP Service Discovery plugin for
 that.)
