 I found an old ticket #5411 that describes my experience *exactly*:

 I can get messages from *some* of my GTalk users.  I have 2-3 that I am
 not seeing their messages - even though they are in the debug XML.

 I can see the prompt in the window that says they are typing ... but I
 never see the <body> contents displayed.

 All Google Talk users are able to see me and receive my messages, but on
 these 2-3 (see debug below) I can see the message that "user is typing"
 but what they typed never appears in the chat window. I *can* see the body
 text in the debug window.

 He typed "Ping." ... I never saw it displayed.
