#16514: Successfully connected Pidgin audio/video call has black screen, no audio

I've been trying to use Pidgin for XMPP audio/video chat with a friend
across the country. The first time we tried it, my microphone wouldn't
work, but everything else worked fine. I then went home - I'm now on
pretty fast Comcast wifi rather than pretty fast Verizon wifi. When we try
to video chat, the call connects, OTR seems to be working, and we can text
chat, but there is no audio or video transmitted. I searched through the
logs a little but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.
I'm on the current Xubuntu release on a Macbook Air, and she's on the
current Linux Mint release on an Asus netbook. We're both using the
current Pidgin Ubuntu release, 2.10.9.
What could be the issue here? I don't think anything changed aside from my
internet connection between these two days (the success and the failure
were about 36 hours apart). We were using the same XMPP accounts too.
I also posted this as a StackExchange question here:

This seems to be a similar issue:

People seemed to assume that his call was failing, but it doesn't seem
that it was (nor is mine).
