Comment:

 It looks like the debug symbols don't match the binaries - this probably
 means that you're still using the self-built binaries (and your patch is
 also likely causing the crash).

 You need to reinstall the OS libpurple package, not just the pidgin
 package.

 For future reference, you shouldn't install manually built stuff into /usr
 (it should go into /usr/local instead).
