 I apologise for the delay in my follow-up.

 Despite numerous attempts, I still have been unable to generate a crash
 report.  All of the lines in the debug log that are quoted above do
 appear, but upon crash, no RPT file shows up at the listed location.

 However, I seem to have accidentally resolved the issue by running Pidgin
 Portable explicitly as administrator (Run As Administrator option in
 Win8.1) I first did this in an attempt to generate the RPT file in case it
 wasn't being created due to a permissions issue.  Since I have been
 running it as administrator, the crash hasn't occurred (it was happening
 2-3 times per day before).

 I'm left with the tentative conclusion that the crash was due to a
 permissions problem.  I have no idea why a permissions problem would only
 show up as GLib error, but that's all I have right now.  I will update the
 ticket if I learn anything further.
