New description:

 I was getting frequent crashes with Pidgin on Ubuntu 14.04.  I purged that
 copy of Pidgin.

 I then downloaded a fresh source of pidgin 2.10.10 from the pidgin-
 developers PPA, and then applied the following steps:

 $ apt-get source pidgin

 $ sudo apt-get build-dep pidgin

 $ cd pidgin-2.10.10

 $ patch -p1 < carbons.5.patch

 $ dpkg-source --commit

 $ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

 $ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

 Still, the crashes continue.  I've attached the backtrace.
