 I spent more time playing around with the problem - I found that my issue
 was likely due to bad 'presence' notification from Pidgin about my status
 - as soon as Trillian logged in under the same account (while Pidgin was
 running), the colleague suddenly appeared online in Pidgin and I was able
 to talk with him.

 I get the feeling Pidgin isn't using the latest MSN protocol possibly?
 I've discovered that Jitsi (https://jitsi.org/) supports the MSN network
 properly and even has OTR built in, so it has replaced Pidgin for me.
