 The online status of XMPP users who are in several groups at once is
 sometimes out of sync, i.e. one group reports them as online, the other as
 offline.
 When hovering the mouse over the user when they are reported as online
 says "Status(########): Available" when they are reported as offline it
 says "Status: Offline\n Status(########): Available" (see screenshot)

 As a workaround it seems to help to log out and in again, then for a while
 the statii stay in sync.

 The server is an openfire instance
