Comment:

 I will argue that neither of these answers provides a good solution for a
 user, as things current exist in Pidgin. Having "magical" fixes without a
 GUI that guides the user to such solutions, when he most needs it, is a
 useless design and leads to loss of user data. A user, such as myself, has
 no idea what to do or how to recover when this particular error message
 occurs. Sending me off to the school of hard knocks, just to learn these
 magic tricks, is NOT a user friendly solution. The splitter PLUGIN only
 works after the fact, not when I needed it, and must be discovered
 somehow. If pressing ctrl+up is the solution, then fix the GUI so that the
 user is made aware of such an answer, and provide him with a discoverable
 path to such an answer.
