 A variant of this seems to still be active as of version 2.10.11-6.

 Found this ticket when gstreamer started segfaulting after running into
 the file descriptor limit.  I don't have a sound server or device
 installed on my machine, so the notifications just lurk there eating up
 resources until I get enough notifications, at which time it crashes.

 Might have managed a temporary workaround by configuring pidgin not to
 play any sounds for notifications.
