#16571: Ad-hoc chats display "sip:username at domain.com" not available Buddy Info >
Display name

     Type: defect | Status: new
Milestone: | Component: unclassified
Version: 2.10.11 | Keywords: sipe display username GUI

When users who aren't in my contact list send me IMs, pidgin/sipe only
displays their SIP address. The user's display name is available if I
right-click, get info to view the the Buddy information. This is confusing
because I have no idea who the person is based on an obscure username, and
whenever this happens I have to look up & remember who they are for the
duration of the conversation. I often have several non-buddies messaging
me at the same time, so remembering who's who can be quite difficult.

Is there some reason the available contact info isn't automatically
displayed? Is this a bug, or a greatly needed enhancement?

I posted this issue in the Sipe protocol forum, and they said it's a
Pidgin issue. Stefan Becker said "There is also no way for protocol
plugins to detect that an IM conversation doesn't have an alias."

I'm using Sipe 1.19.0 on Pidin 2.10.11 on Win7x64 and our company uses MS
Office 365. I can provide any additional configuration data you need (or
that I can get). Just let me know how I can help debug if needed.

This is what I see when non-buddies IM me:
