 ...Okay, I feel dumb now.

 It turns out that the MSN server that I had been connecting to had stopped
 supporting MSNP18 (as listed from http://ismsndeadyet.com/ ).  I changed
 the server IP to that of another one that still supports the protocol, and
 was able to connect through that IP.

 Apparently, Googling for the exact text of the error wasn't enough to find
 this particular issue (either that, or I missed it); at least the next
 person to be in my position will find this when they Google the error.
