 I have the same problem here. I am using  2.10.11 (libpurple 2.10.11) in
 Debian 8. It seems that it is related to a webcam in particular, because
 using exactly the same software in a Dell Latitude E6420 I don´t have any
 problem.

  The laptop where I see the problem, a Lenovo N581,  has a "Lenovo
 EasyCamera" with USB ID 04f2:b2e2 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd. This
 device is handled by the  uvcvideo driver. I can use the device with other
 programs like cheese or gst-launch without problems.
