 Yes, 'firefox $url' seems correct.

 Also note that Firefox 36.0.1 added back support for -remote but it's
 planned to be removed again in Firefox 39. Though this time it'll return
 an error code which should trigger the fallback behavior in most (all?)
 applications that made use of -remote. [1]
