 Yes, downgrading NSS fixed my issues and pidgin now works as expected.
 However this solution has been terrible for other reasons since I also had
 to downgrade Firefox, Thunderbird, and several other packages as a result.

 I am working with my chat server admin to make stronger rsa/dsa certs for
 the chat server as a more permanent solution.
