 Steps I have taken to fix (kind of)
 1.  Delete all groups in OpenFire (not the users)
 2.  Kill all running Pidgin.exe that are connecting to the OpenFire
 server.
 2.  Delete Pidgin files blist.xml and status.xml in all Pidgin user
 profiles.
 3.  In OpenFire, create groups and add users to the groups.

 The first group created works as it should with user status being correct.
 Any group afterwards will not show the correct status after 15-20 minutes
 of Pidgin starting.
