 I have been using pidgin for a google talk account, and in the past week
 email notifications have only been appearing when I log into the client,
 but not when it arrives. The ordinary behavior when signed in was that it
 queries the server and receives new email when it arrives.  Is there a
 reason I wouldn't receive new notifications when I get mail when signed
 in?

 I have done the following to troubleshoot, with no success:
 1. Updated to latest Pidgin client
 2. Deleted all old certificates
 3. Delete and recreate connection

 Account Settings:
 Protocol: XMPP
 Domain: gmail.com
 Security: require encryption
 port: 5222
 Connect server: talk.google.com
