#16782: Character entered via compose key not replaced with matching smiley

Version: 2.10.11 | Keywords: smiley

In my smiley theme I have Unicode U+263A ("white smiling face", ☺)
pointing to a smiley face icon.
I'm on Ubuntu. I can compose this character (like I just did above) by
typing [compose] [:] [)].
If I do this in a Pidgin chat box I see the raw smiley face glyph; it has
not been replaced. If I then send it I see the bitmap icon.
If I copy and paste the character (whether from the icon in a Pidgin
window, which puts the original unicode character on the clipboard, or
from a raw glyph elsewhere) it is immediately replaced.
