Comment:

 Currently, Libpurple doesn't have a concept of adding buddies to several
 groups, so this issue isn't limited to XMPP.

 I use to work around this issue by going through the “add buddy” procedure
 several times. It seems to work fine although I've been told that doing so
 may cause problems on some protocols.
