New description:

 I friend and me tried to implement custom smileys, say for the string
 'meow'.

 Actual Result:
 When sending 'meow' the custom smiley is rendered correctly, but when
 receiving a text message including 'meow' the string won't be translated
 to the custom smiley.

 Expected Result:
 Whether a message is received or sent shouldn't make a difference for
 custom smileys.

 He is using Pidgin on Windows, I am using it on Debian. So the bug seems
 to be platform independent

 The above bug only appears while using encryption from the off-the-record
 messaging 4.0.1 plugin.
