Comment:

 Steam can do that because they show the IM widget inside of their own
 window (the game), they have control over it, pidgin does not.

 To be able to do that, the program should do some tricky dirty X11/WM
 specific magic. Everything here would be broken once Wayland kicks in.

 I think this can be better handled by the Window Manager.
