 Found ticket #5681 describing a similar issue but not quite the same, with
 a patch of dubious quality (accesses internal members of the widget)

 Found more dupes, closed for other reasons: #7065 #8821 #8992

 That's in gtk, not in our codebase. We can't just do that. And something
 here is triggering the bug over there.
