 So I've tried to reproduce this and I can't.  I know others are
 experiencing it, so I'm missing something.  I'm using the fonts-symbola
 package on debian debian stable with pidgin release-2.x.y built from hg.
 I've set the smiley theme to default and none and it just works.

 That said, the thumbs up emoji was rendering backwards, so that might be
 part of it it, but I am not getting the "missing glyph" boxes.
