 Pidgin crashed on launch 27JAN2018.  It did so six times in a row.
 Thereafter, I downloaded the gdb debugger and tried to get a backtrace ...
 but with the debugger open it didn't crash.

 On 28JAN2018 Pidgin again crashed on launch.  I started the debugger and
 tried again to get a back trace.  Then it did not crash.  I closed the
 debugger, and re-launched Pidgin, and it started up normally -- no crash.

 I submit here the trace I did get in hopes it provides some clue anyway.
