Is it significantly more work for translators or for developers  
merging in changes to deal with 3 potfiles (pidgin / finch /  
libpurple) rather than 1?
If so, is there some way that the translated files could be split up  
during the make process or at some other point into their component  
parts?

On the other hand, just seeing data on how many unique strings are in  
each part could be worthwhile -- if the majority of pidgin's strings  
are from libpurple, it's clearly not going to have a big impact to  
split them up, anyways.
