Why not just ask the user the first time? Just say something like
"Pidgin can import your Gaim configuration for you. Select 'Yes' to
import your settings and buddy lists, or 'No' to start Pidgin with
the default configuration."
Then have a checkbox for "delete old Gaim configuration".
You'd probably want to make more descriptive buttons, like "Import
settings" and "Use default configuration" but that's the general idea.
