I agree -- except that I consider one-on-one or few-to-few chats to be
something quite different from chats with many users, a lot of churn,
and a large number of idlers.  Due to this, I would want a different
interface for each.  I don't see the fact that Pidgin (finch) does not
address this interface as necessarily a downside, though handling each
with a reasonable measure of alacrity would be nice.

In other words, I think true IRC-style communication might be a little
out of scope for "instant messaging".  However, I think it's a
related-enough technology that we might decide to put it also under
our umbrella.
